TRP Full Form
What is the full form of TRP?
Television Rating Point.
Sometimes called Target Rating Point.
What is TRP?
TRP is a standard measurement system (i.e., metric, parameter, or tool) that indicates the popularity of a television channel or program.
This is used to understand which program is watched most by the viewers. In general, higher TRP means higher popularity of the channel or the program.
TRP provides the advertisement and the marketing agencies an idea about the mood of the people. It is one of the most important deciding factors for marketing and advertisement agencies to choose the channel or program to display their advertisements, or investors (or producers) determine where to invest their money. Usually, they decide to invest money in programs/channels with higher TRP.
Based on TRP television
channels also decides the revenue be charged upon advertisements.
How TRP is calculated?
TRP is generally measured by an independent rating agency. For example, in India TRP is calculated by Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India.
Previously,
Indian Television Audience Measurement (INTAM) was responsible to measure TRP.
But currently, their function is discontinued in India.
TRP is measured using the following techniques.
- Frequency Monitoring Method: In this technique, a few thousand monitoring devices (or gadgets are known as People’s meter) are attached to the target set of televisions in different houses. The People’s meter notes down the channel, program, and time a viewer spends his day on. Then the average data of 7 days and 30-day period is collected by the agency and later used for calculation of the TRP.
- Picture
Matching Technique: In this method, the
People’s meter continuously records a small portion of the picture that is
being watched on television (TV). Then, the rating agency collects data from
the target TV sets and calculates the TRP of a channel or program based on
viewing time.
- Audio
Watermarking Technique: This is the latest
state-of-the-art technology that is presently being used by BARC to measure the
TRP of television channels in India. Here, audio watermarks (inaudible to the
human ear) are embedded in video content before upload and broadcast on a TV
channel. The viewing details are recorded in BAR-O-meters i.e., specialized
gadgets installed in several thousands of TV sets with the ability to sense and
record the audio watermarks. The raw data is cleaned, merged with the channel,
program, language, and broadcast schedule details to statistically estimate the
TRP of a channel or program.
