The full
form of URL is Uniform Resource Locator.
What does URL mean?
Uniform
Resource Locator (URL), at times also named as Universal Resource Locator, is a
subset of the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies the address of a
specific resource (web pages, graphics, videos, or other resources) on the
internet.
URL is a
specific character string which helps in accessing data from the internet. It defines
the way of obtaining resource from World Wide Web.
It was
created by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, and the URI
working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1994.
Each URL
contains the following information. (See image for more clarity)
Protocol
name: the protocol (eg: http, ftp etc) to be used to fetch (or to allow
electronic devices to communicate with each other) the resource.
A colon
followed by double forward-slash (://)
Hostname
(domain name) or IP address: the name of the server on the network (domain
name).
A colon
followed by port number (Optional)
File_name: the
pathname to the file on the server.
