Wi-Fi Full Form / WiFi Full Form
What is the Full form of Wi-Fi?
The general misconception is Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. The
misconception arises from an earlier advertisement slogan “The standard for
wireless fidelity”. Actually, Wi-Fi is not an acronym rather a brand name (or,
the trademark of IEEE 802.11 protocol) created by a marketing farm
(Interbrand). According to the trademark (which belongs to the Wi-Fi Alliance
Organization) the term is “Wi-Fi”, not WiFi, Wifi, or wifi.
What is Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is a
wireless networking technology that allows electronic devices for example
computers (e.g., laptops, desktops, game consoles, etc.), cell phones, smart
watches, and other equipment (e.g., printers, video cameras, etc.) to interface
with the Internet using radio waves.
How does Wi-Fi network work?
Wi-Fi
networks use radio waves, a form of electromagnetic radiation. Usually, the
electronic devices like laptop, desktop, cell phones transmit radio signal
through an antenna after converting the data to radio waves using a Wi-Fi
adapter. The transmitted waves are received by the wireless routers which
convert the radio signals back into data and sends the data to the internet
using physical connections. At the time of getting data from the internet, the
process is reversed.
Some facts about Wi-Fi
- The first public demo of a wireless packet network (ALHOAnet) has happened in Hawaii.
- The true precursor of Wi-Fi, WaveLAN, was developed by NCR Corporation and A & T Corporation (1971).
- The first version of the IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol was released in 1997. (IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)
- Wi-Fi transmits at frequencies of 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
- Wi-Fi can transmit up to 400 kilometers (with some advanced types of equipment).
- Right now there is a variety of Wi-Fi protocols:
- 802.11a
- 802.11b
- 802.11g
- 802.11n
- 802.11ac
